customer-calling-potential-sale-answer-the-phoneThere are many small businesses out there that use a cell phone for their main line of business. It is a common practice and allows the owner to be more accessible without missing important calls and potential business. Business owners are free to do the day to day operations of the business without having to sit by the phone, have scheduled office hours or a pay to have extra office personnel.

I recently called another company that I haven’t used before, looking for a quote. The phone call was on a Sunday night and I understand it was outside of “business hours”. Being a small business owner myself, I answer the phone outside of business hours and didn’t think it would be a big deal.

When the person answered, they said “It’s Sunday. We don’t work Sundays. Can you call back on Monday?”

I was definitely set back and shocked by the response that I received. I thought if this guy didn’t want to talk with a potential customer, he should have let the call go to voicemail. He could have just as easily taken down my info and said he would call me back on Monday. Unfortunately for this small business owner, he lost a potential customer.

Always keep in mind that as a small business owner, a cell phone is a great way to increase your business by being more accessible, otherwise it might as well be a desk phone at the office. In order to grow your business, you need to serve customers. If you aren’t putting the customer first, your business will become stagnant.
